(TULSA, OK. May 30, 2023) — World builders welcome! Works of art can be entry points to new dimensions and alternate realities. Experience the Philbrook Helmerich Gallery like never before in a hands-on exhibition that invites visitors to play with purpose, experiment, and spend creative time together.

New Realms: Art Lab runs June 28–September 17, 2023.

The exhibition begins with works of contemporary art selected to inspire, evoke, and captivate. Explore light, dark, and shadows in the Shadowlands. Add your own artwork to the exhibition in the Realm of Makers. Or dive into the Cardboard Dimension, where you can experiment with the classic cardboard box on a truly epic scale. Must be seen to be believed.

“Art can inspire us to leave our current reality behind, and to construct a new world entirely through our imagination,” says the exhibition’s curator, Jenny Fisher, Senior Manager of Youth and Family Audiences.

Centering the experience is a journey into Rachel Rose’s Lake Valley (2016), an other-worldly eight-minute film installation mixing collage, found footage, and repurposed materials. Together, the fantastical scenes Rose creates serve as the setting for a narrative tale in which a lonely, rabbit-like pet explores a nearby forest while looking for friendship.

New Realms is another big step forward in redefining what museums can be and do for our communities,” says Philbrook CEO & President Scott Stulen. “I’m proud of the work my team is doing being stewards for a historic institution while always keeping one foot in the future.”

As summer heats up, Philbrook presents one of the coolest experiences around, literally and figuratively. It’s always 72 degrees and low humidity in the Museum. Step inside New Realms. Think outside the box.

About Philbrook Museum of Art

Philbrook Museum of Art is committed to being Tulsa’s most welcoming and engaging cultural institution, providing a unique trifecta of experiences: a historic home, world class art museum, 25 acres of gardens.

Philbrook Museum of Art opened on October 25, 1939. The addition of a 70,000 square foot wing in 1990 turned the historic home into a modern museum complex. A major garden renovation in 2004 cemented the Museum’s reputation as “the most beautiful place in Oklahoma.”

Through bold action and strategic investment, we create a space for new ideas, diverse stories and perspectives, and social connection. The Philbrook Collection features more than 16,000 objects with a focus on American, Native American, and European art. Serving over 160,000 visitors annually, Philbrook shines a light on Tulsa’s storied and complex past while building a diverse and creative vision of the city’s future.
