Two schools of thought dominated the European art world during the 19th century--Barbizon and Academic. Barbizon artists favored an accurate though somewhat romanticized impression of the real world, while the Academics preferred a highly polished style with historical or mythological subjects.

Italian Renaissance - Baroque Painting & Sculpture
During this rebirth of ancient Greco-Roman philosophy and art, Christian themes dominated the Italian Renaissance. Most painting and sculpture from 1400-1600 depict Biblical figures and was commissioned by religious institutions or wealthy individuals.
