Italian Renaissance - Baroque Painting & SculptureDuring this rebirth of ancient Greco-Roman philosophy and art, Christian themes dominated the Italian Renaissance. Most painting and sculpture from 1400-1600 depict Biblical figures and was commissioned by religious institutions or wealthy individuals. The Baroque period dates from approximately 1600-1700 and took place during the Counter Reformation. As people left the Catholic Church for Protestant religions, art became propaganda. The Catholic Church hoped that by visually recounting dramatic events from the Old and New Testaments, it could preserve wayward parishioners and convert Protestants. |
