From the pottery designs of the Southwest and the beaded material culture of the Plains to the intricate basketry of the Southeast and the formline design of the Pacific Northwest, each tribe has a unique, region-specific visual language based upon their tribe's world views. These artistic expressions often incorporate distinguishing patterns, geometric shapes, and abstract representations of both the physical and spiritual worlds.
Everything We Dream: Native Abstraction braids together a history of artworks to visually examine Native American arts practices and how they shaped modern and contemporary Native Abstraction. Exhibiting a diverse grouping of pottery, basketry, jewelry, sculpture, painting, and other material culture that implements geometric forms and patterns, the dynamic, abstracted works combine to tell a fluid story – one of cultural continuance. Maybe everything we dream is just that.
